Socks & Cyclists: The Ultimate Pair
It’s not hard to spot a cyclist in a crowd. No matter their body shape, they will likely have a conservative, energy-saving gate. If it’s warm, they will likely be wearing shorts, making the inevitable tan lines visible. If they’re wearing socks, that will be the dead giveaway. Out on the road, even drivers who have never ridden bicycles notice cyclists only wear cycling-specific socks.
Cycling socks are unique. Their light, thin, low bulk outline is by design. Socks make cycling more comfortable, and anything that makes an activity so reliant on human power easier and more efficient will eventually be adopted. This endless drive toward conservation and comfort is also what made water bottles that keep beverages on a bicycle at the optimal temperature a no-brainer. It’s all about keeping the body in the most effective performance ‘zone’. Overheating or freezing while riding is detrimental, to say the least. All it takes is one experience to change a rider's mindset and preparation forever.
DeFeet was the first name in cycling-specific socks. With the introduction of the Aireator open-mesh weave airflow design sock in 1992, DeFeet cemented itself as the original creator of the modern cycling-specific sock. While there are no steadfast rules around what type of rider must wear a certain sock design, stereotypes do exist.
The Easy Rider. Don’t let the name fool you, this person can always surprise with unbound strength and perseverance. Usually smiling, laughing, and quick to start a conversation, this rider does not lack a sense of humor. Their socks are usually colorful and have funny designs on them. Their socks say, “Let’s chat, share some stories, and have fun.”
The Enthusiast. As the name suggests, this person has unbridled enthusiasm for the ride. They want to experience the ride and are eager to learn the limits of their abilities. We love The Enthusiast for all of these reasons. They are rolling demonstrations of what draws us to the sport of cycling. Because they are often newer to the sport and want to blend in, their sock choices are often more conservative. The Enthusiast will often wear solid colors that go with everything. White, black, grey, or navy blue. Their socks say, “I love riding, I’m a fast learner, and I’m excited to be out here.”
The Smasher. Keep an eye out for The Smasher. They will be the ones wearing tall, ultra-thin socks with special aerodynamic contours. Their legs will be immaculately shaven, sinewy, and seasoned by the elements. They put in their time. They are driven individuals. They may or may not be social creatures, but you won’t find out on the ride because you may not get the chance to ride next to them. If a Smasher passes you, don’t be shy. Get behind them and hang on as long as you can. Their socks say, “I am an achiever, and I care about the details in all aspects of my life.”
Of course, there are many more stereotypes. These are just a few. We appreciate them all, at any stage they are at. The Smasher was likely the Enthusiast at one point, and their journey may find them eventually becoming an Easy Rider. The ride of life is about self-discovery. Learning. Enjoying the time we have.
Accessories like socks and bottles help us enjoy the ride more. They are some of the lowest-cost items that can make the biggest difference in how we feel on the ride. They can also be a statement piece. DeFeet Custom gives teams, shops, and brands the opportunity to take our cycling and athletic socks and customize them with logos and colors. Bivo, the maker of stainless still cycling water bottles, customized our Levitator Lite sock with art and their logo.
What do your socks (and water bottle) say about you?
